What is Dichroic Glass?
So, what is dichroic glass? Dichroic glass was first developed by NASA as part of their satellite mirror systems. A coating was needed that had special characteristics.
Of course, artists found a wonderful use for this amazing coating. For jewelry, the thin dichroic coating must be applied with lasers to the sheet glass in very controlled environments. Di-chroic means two colors and this glass reflects/transmits different colors depending on the angle of light. I call this the "mood" of the glass.
All Umeboshi jewelry is handmade by the artist in Dark Hollow Studio. Each piece is carefully fired and annealed in a digital kiln for beauty and longevity. Some pieces enter the kiln several times to get just the right colors and shape.
